Eczema and Bedding: What Parents in the UAE Should Know About Sensitive Skin and Children’s Sheets

Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions affecting children in the UAE. The combination of extreme heat, heavy air conditioning, low humidity and high levels of airborne dust creates a challenging environment for children with sensitive or reactive skin — and the bedroom, where a child spends eight to ten hours every night, is one of the most important environments to get right.

Bedding is one of the most frequently overlooked triggers. This article covers what parents should know about choosing the right sheets for children with eczema or sensitive skin in the UAE climate, and why fabric choice matters more than most people realise.

Why Eczema Is Particularly Common in the UAE

The UAE environment presents a combination of factors that commonly aggravate eczema and sensitive skin in children. Extreme outdoor heat drives prolonged indoor AC use, which significantly lowers humidity and dries out the skin barrier. Desert dust and sand particles are persistent airborne irritants. Rapid temperature transitions between air-conditioned interiors and the outdoor heat cause constant adjustment in the skin’s moisture regulation. Together, these factors make the UAE climate significantly more challenging for children with atopic conditions than a temperate environment would be.

For children already predisposed to eczema, these environmental stressors can trigger or worsen flare-ups — particularly during the summer months when AC use is at its most intense and outdoor temperatures are extreme.

How Bedding Affects Eczema

A child with eczema is in contact with their bedding for the majority of the night. The fabric against their skin influences several factors that directly affect skin health:

Temperature regulation. Overheating is a well-documented eczema trigger. When a child sleeps hot — whether due to warm bedding, a warm room, or a fabric that traps body heat — the resulting sweat and heat buildup aggravates inflammation and increases the urge to scratch. Breathable bedding that allows heat to dissipate reduces this risk significantly.

Friction and texture. Rough or coarse fabric creates physical friction against sensitive skin throughout the night, which can break the already compromised skin barrier in children with eczema. The smoother and softer the fabric, the less mechanical irritation is created during sleep.

Chemical residues. Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and microfiber are typically treated with a range of chemical finishes during manufacturing — softeners, anti-static coatings, wrinkle-resistant treatments. These can act as contact irritants for sensitive skin. Natural fibres require significantly fewer chemical treatments and are therefore less likely to carry residual irritants.

Moisture management. Children sweat during sleep. A fabric that absorbs and releases moisture naturally keeps the skin surface drier than one that holds moisture against the skin. Trapped moisture creates a warm, humid microclimate that encourages bacterial and fungal growth — both of which are associated with eczema flares.

Why Microfiber and Synthetic Sheets Are Problematic for Eczema

Microfiber is a synthetic polyester-based fabric that is widely available and commonly used in budget and mid-range bedding across the UAE. While it feels soft to the touch in a shop, it has several properties that make it a poor choice for children with sensitive skin or eczema.

Microfiber does not breathe. It traps heat and moisture against the skin rather than allowing it to dissipate, which creates exactly the warm, damp conditions that aggravate eczema. It is also manufactured with chemical finishes that, while largely safe for most people, can be problematic for children whose skin barrier is already compromised. And because it’s a synthetic fibre, it generates more static electricity than natural fibres — static can increase the sensation of itch and discomfort on sensitive skin.

Why Pure Cotton Is the Recommended Choice

Pure cotton is consistently recommended for children with eczema and sensitive skin by dermatologists and paediatric skin specialists. The reasons are practical and well-evidenced:

Property
Pure Cotton
Microfiber / Synthetic
Breathability
Excellent, allows airflow
Poor, traps heat and moisture
Chemical treatment
Minimal, natural fibre
Multiple synthetic finishes
Moisture management
Absorbs and releases naturally
Holds moisture against skin
Static electricity
Minimal
Higher, can increase itch sensation
Hypoallergenic
Naturally hypoallergenic
Synthetic, can irritate sensitive skin
Thread Count and Weave — What Actually Matters

For children with eczema, thread count matters less than weave type and fabric quality. A 400 thread count sateen weave in long-staple cotton will be significantly smoother and softer against sensitive skin than a 600 thread count sheet made from short-staple cotton or a cotton-polyester blend. The sateen weave produces a silk-like surface finish that reduces friction during sleep — which is the property that matters most for a child who may already be scratching during the night.

Thread counts above 600 in affordable bedding are almost always achieved by counting individual threads multiple times — a marketing technique rather than a genuine quality indicator. Focus on fibre type and weave, not the thread count number.

Washing Children’s Bedding with Eczema

How bedding is washed matters as much as what it’s made from. For children with eczema or sensitive skin, these practices reduce the risk of detergent-related irritation:

Use a non-biological, fragrance-free detergent — biological enzymes and added fragrances are common contact irritants for eczema-prone skin. Wash at 40-60°C, which is hot enough to eliminate dust mites without degrading the fabric. Run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent residue is removed from the fabric. Avoid fabric softeners entirely — they coat fabric fibres with chemical agents that can irritate sensitive skin and actually reduce the breathability of cotton over time.

For children with active eczema, washing sheets once a week is recommended to reduce dust mite accumulation, which is a well-established eczema trigger. In the UAE, where dust levels are higher than in most climates, weekly washing is particularly important.

Other Bedroom Factors That Affect Eczema

Bedding is one part of a broader bedroom environment. Other factors worth addressing for a child with eczema in the UAE:

Bedroom temperature. Keeping the room between 18-20°C where possible reduces the risk of overheating during sleep. Children with eczema are particularly sensitive to temperature fluctuations.

Humidity. UAE air conditioning strips moisture from the air. A bedroom humidity level of 40-50% is more comfortable for eczema-prone skin than the very dry air produced by AC alone. A humidifier in the bedroom can help maintain this.

Dust mite covers. Allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows reduce dust mite exposure significantly. These are particularly worth considering for children whose eczema is triggered by dust mite allergy.

Pillow choice. Synthetic pillow fillings are more resistant to dust mites but the pillowcase fabric still matters — a pure cotton pillowcase against the face and neck is important for children with facial eczema.

When to See a Doctor

Environmental changes including bedding can significantly reduce eczema flare frequency and severity, but they are not a substitute for medical advice. If your child’s eczema is frequent, severe, affecting sleep significantly, or not responding to environmental management, a paediatric dermatologist or allergist in the UAE can assess for specific triggers including dust mite allergy, food allergy and contact sensitivities, and recommend appropriate treatment.
